Lemont alumnus among candidates for two college football national awards

Lemont High School graduate David Molk 07, who is entering his second year as a starter for the University of Michigan football program, has been named to the watch lists for two national college football awards. Molk is one of only five sophomores and 44 candidates overall for the Rimington Trophy - given annually to college footballs top center - and is one of three Michigan players vying for the Lombardi Award, which honors the nations best offensive or defensive lineman.

After redshirting as a freshman during the 2007 campaign, Molk started all 12 games for head coach Rich Rodriguezs team last fall as a redshirt freshman. Though the Wolverines posted only a 3-9 record, Molk took every offensive snap as Michigan squared off against 10 bowl teams while converting to Rodriguezs spread offense.

The 62, 280-pound Molk is one of only 14 centers named to the Lombardi Award list. In Spring 2008, he received the teams Iron Wolverine Award as the best all-around conditioned player from the linemen group during spring drills. He holds seven of the eight strength and conditioning records for offensive linemen at Michigan.

Rated nationally as one of the top high school centers in the country, Molk was a four-year starter for head coach Eric Michaelsen at Lemont.
In his last three seasons (2004-06), he helped the Indians post a 27-7 record, which included the programs first-ever IHSA Playoff quarterfinal appearance in 2005 when Lemont established a single-season record (since broken) for victories with a 10-2 mark.
